Coyote Tracks: Nokia and Microsoft, not sitting in a tree

Coyote Tracks: Nokia and Microsoft, not sitting in a tree chipotle: While I’m late to the party commenting on this (holidays, what can you do), you may have seen numerous news reports about Nokia considering Windows Phone 7 as an OS instead of (or in addition to) Symbian and MeeGo. Before writing anything on this: I’d previously mentioned that I work for… Some of the good people at Nokia left by themselves; some of them Nokia finds no need for…

Free content kills

Peter Vesterbacka (“Angry Birds” developer) Paid content just doesn’t work on Android. This is no news for most of us, of course. But just add Kontra’s insight about 2011 cheap Android’s expansion:  So the Android crusaders will be circling us in 2011, swinging their $85 smartswords to demand our capitulation in a rapture of inevitability. [..] Resistance is futile. And you’ll come to a “Death of a Developer” at the end of 2011.

How about extreme design?!

How about extreme design?! This is a “shot” from Dribbbler, showing off a (PS3) game’s icon extreme design. One of the comments to this shot reads: Allison House “This is beautiful. I want to play that game so badly…” I would say this is the secret answer to the secret question “How is it possible for such expensive devices Apple’s building to gain such a traction?”. The Old School tends to answer: “Huge marketing and communication push” and they are only half right; the best advertising plan is only a small fragment of what “extreme design” could mean to humans…

Gravity – Twitter client for Symbian teaches Nokia some usability musts: this is how a real touch keyboard should look like. Look for Jan Ole Suhr on Nokia forums or @janole and see comments like this: “Nokia should buy Gravity or hire Jan Ole because Gravity is by far the most impressive functional design Symbian has seen!”. This comment is 2 yeas old already… (via Intomobile)

TIPb on iPhone usability

TIPb on iPhone usability “My 2 year old godson can use iPhone well. He can turn it on. He can find and launch his apps. He can play his games and read along with Dr. Seuss and Disney. About all my 2 year old can do with my Android 2.1 Nexus One is throw it. That doesn’t indicate the iPhone is a “toy” for children, it indicates the level of usability Apple has achieved, and is something Android enthusiasts should be angry that Google doesn’t seem intent on matching, just as iOS users are upset when they see that cool new feature Apple seemingly has no interest in.

What has Android done for Apple? Horace Dediu @asymco is looking into Android’s future to see whether its viral spread will hit iPhone price. It seems not.

Verbs – a bit under expectations. Of course this is a beautiful app, but it lacks the minimum functionality. You can say it’s just a GTalk client for now, which is not enough. No video share, no notification, no VOIP. Just multiple GTalk accounts. Keep up the hard work, guys!

iPhone dominates European market

Daring Fireball: “One big difference between Europe and the U.S.: the iPhone is available on multiple carriers throughout Europe. (Via Alex Vega.)” Yes, since tomorrow! Till tomorrows Apple uses the same method as in US: unique national operator.

European telcos ask for money from Google and Apple

European telcos ask for money from Google and Apple Gruber says no way. Me thinks problem… Imagine content filtering, selective FOTAs, default phone features transformed into premium, VOIP or P2P extra-charging and God knows what many other “initiatives” brought against “magical user experience”… Me thinks that’s clearly not the way to customer satisfaction.

AMOLED is dying

For 2011, iPad 2 will have backlit LCD, Nexus S will also sport super clear LCD. I guess Samsung won’t have a business case with only one manufacturer using AMOLED: themselves.

Susan Orlean's argument for ebooks

Susan Orlean’s argument for ebooks Hard copy books won’t disappear because of the ebooks, they’re like horses: “Horses lost out to cars, but obviously they didn’t die out as a species” This isn’t the real problem. What’s troubling everybody is a major industry change, from manufacturers to editors and libraries, in terms of capital dynamics. It’s the revenue that’ll die!

PiZero on OVI pricing model

Not happy at all. web • 12/7/10 12:31” “I fear all this will lead, in some time, to the end of my business. Nokia do not value enough high quality content. web • 12/7/10 12:38” (PiZero is one of the best symbian theme designers. Actually he is the best symbian theme designer)
